Performing Arts students have the time of their lives

Academy for Theatre Arts students were the first in the country to take part in the new Dirty Dancing musical experience in Manchester.

The Academy for Theatre Arts, which delivers a fully funded Extended National Diploma in Performing Arts in partnership with Newcastle-under-Lyme College, were chosen to take part in the new Dirty Dancing workshop prior to watching the production at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on 1 December.

The students took part in a four hour workshop working with the shows cast and musicians which culminated in a performance of, The Playhouse, Kellermans and Time of My Life.

Pictured: Paul-Michael Jones (Johnny) and Charlotte Gooch (Baby) from Dirty Dancing the musical.

The students are already fortunate to have Shona Lindsay, who plays the part of Marjorie Housman in the production, as one of their musical theatre tutors. The students are familiar with Shona’s talent and professionalism but for most of them it will be the first time they have seen her on stage.

This is the first national tour of Dirty Dancing, the show is receiving rave reviews and the students have had…the time of their lives!

Students invited to perform in London

Students from the Academy for Theatre Arts were invited to perform in the Lord Mayor’s of London’s Show.

The students who study the Extended Diploma in Performing Arts were asked to represent North Staffordshire as the New Lord Mayor of London has links with the area and his father still lives in Stoke-on-Trent. On Saturday 12 November, the students danced in the parade to routines themed around the pottery industry. They were joined by Saxon warriors who were promoting the Staffordshire Hoard and pupils from Trentham High School.

The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent was their host for the day and they were entertained by a spectacular fireworks display on the banks of the river Thames before their day finished.

The Lord Mayor’s of London’s Show is like no other procession in the world. It is 3 miles long and nearly 800 years old and its 6000 participants will spend months preparing floats for the amazement of hundreds of thousands of people who line the streets of the City to watch them go by.

NULC do 'something funny for money'

If there's one thing that NULC staff and students like to do its ‘something funny for money’ in aid of Comic Relief.  NULC was a hub of activity on Friday 18 March with fancy dress, bake sales, waxing and the most talked about event of the day, the NULC FlashMob.

Dance Lecturer Faye Matthews rounded up her troupes which included students, staff and even a member of the senior management team.  Then headed to the new Sainsbury’s store in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where they wowed the crowds and are now rapidly becoming an online phenomenon.

Other activities taking place throughout the day included a fancy dress competition which resulted in a monkey and pirates roaming the corridors!  A yummy bake sale organised by Early Years students, Fun Run by Sports Performance and Excellence students, leg waxing in the Transform Salon.  As well as various fund raising efforts by Learner Services, Starbucks staff and the Students’ Union.

The money is still being counted but so far NULC have managed to raise over £500.00, which is a fantastic amount.  Thank you to everyone who took part and did ‘something funny for money’.
